Vaper’s Tongue: What it is, why it happens and how to cure it

Have you ever been vaping your favourite flavour, and suddenly noticed you can’t taste it properly anymore? Or, even worse, found you can’t taste anything or that your tongue is a bit numb?

Then, my friend, you have the dreaded “vaper’s tongue”. Don’t panic, as it’s not serious or permanent…

Your tongue will have anything from 2000 to 10000 taste buds.  If you are at the upper end of the scale (10,000 taste buds or more) you are a “super taster” and could consider a career in tea or wine tasting;  perhaps even become an e-liquid reviewer! The cells in your taste buds are in a constant cycle of dying away and then re-growing. This cycle can take anything from 10 days to 2 weeks. Despite the thousands of taste buds that coat our tongue, smell also plays an important part in our sense of taste. Messages from your nose combine with taste to create the flavour you enjoy when you eat, drink or vape.

If you vape the same flavour for an extended period of time your taste buds can become saturated with those flavourings, and the taste can become dulled or in the worst case, almost nonexistent. Dehydration can also lead to a poor sense of taste, so there’s another good reason to ensure you drink plenty of water on a daily basis, particularly if you vape!

Another point worth mentioning is that if your favourite juice seems to have lost it’s edge please make sure your atomiser has been replaced recently…You may not even have vaper’s tongue at all, just an atomiser that’s overdue for a change.

So what to do if you think you have vaper’s tongue? The simplest solution is to vape a different flavour for a time to “reset” your taste buds. If you’ve been enjoying a sweet, desert-style vape, why not try something a little more fruity or tart/sharp…this can help a great deal; then before you know it you’ll be able to enjoy your favourite desert once more!

Another trick, apparently used by professional wine tasters, is to inhale the smell of fresh-ground coffee beans…this also “resets” your taste buds. We haven’t tried this solution here at Purest Vapours, but if you’re experiencing vaper’s tongue then there’s no harm in giving it a go….Even switching to a different flavour in an evening as an “after-dinner” vape can help prevent vaper’s tongue from occurring in the first place.
